Karl May beteuerte bis zu seinem Lebensende hartnäckig, in seiner Jugend außereuropäische Reisen unternommen zu haben. Tatsächlich reiste er erst 1899/1900 in den Orient und 1908 erstmals in die USA. Die Daten dieser Amerikareise bilden das Grundgerüst der aktuellen Sonderausstellung im Karl-May-Haus, ergänzt durch Dokumente, Bilder und Gegenstände aus dem Amerikaabenteuer.
